Last month news broke that Whitehall contract cleaners were being paid less than the living wage of £8.55. A ‘low-pay league of shame’ revealed the following cleaning rates of pay in these Government departments:
• Environment £6.19
• Health £6.32
• Business £6.46
• Foreign Office £6.54
London cleaners, supported by civil society alliance Citizens UK are stepping up their campaign. Letters have been sent to 10 MPs demanding a fair living wage for cleaning services, a rate that reflects the true cost of living in the city. Each contained personal accounts of the struggles faced by low income cleaners in London, and is signed by over 150 individuals.
