Bicarbonate of soda (or baking soda) acts as a neutralising agent, and natural deodoriser.  If you want to get rid of bad household smells like smoke, sprinkle bicarb on carpets and upholstery.  Leave it for a few hours and vacuum it up. The bicarb absorbs the smell, and is then sucked up by the hoover.
